ABOUT GIRLS'NET

Girls’Net is a South African programme that gets girls actively involved with technology for their development. Our aim is to use ICTs to help girls realise their full potential. The Girls’Net website creates a space for and by girls where they can get information on relevant topics, air their views on social issues, interact with other girls and express themselves creatively. It is a place where they can exchange thoughts and ideas on just about anything! Content on this site is written, edited and/or sourced by Girls’Net club members, with the occasional assistance from club mentors and the Project Coordinator.

However, Girls’Net is much more than the website. Our activities also include:

- Training camps
- Provincial clubs
- Girls’Net newsletter (HerITage)
- Audio/radio programme

Girls’Net is a project of Women’sNet, a non-governmental organisation that uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) to help women and girls develop themselves through amplifying their voices for social action. Girls’Net started in 2004 with four all-girl technical training camps that resulted in the creation of unique provincial Girls’Net clubs. The project is supported by club mentors , the Girls’Net club-elected officials , the Women’sNet team and a range of partners.

Girls’NET APPROACH

Girls’Net supports a child participatory approach to working with young people. We believe access to information is fundamental to development and promote a human rights based approach in all our training. We promote these ideas through:

-Building girls’ awareness around gender issues
-Developing their technical skills, specifically their ability to use ICTs
-Increasing their media literacy (click: article 19 of our constitution)
-Building a culture of social activism and community participation

Our primary aim is to promote girls’ access to information and resources that can improve their lives through/with using ICTs.
