Girls Make their Voices Heard!

Project Initiators:
UNICEF, South Africa Girl-Child Alliance, with Women'sNet

The Project
This project seeks to promote awareness about the gendered experiences of high school girls in the Northern Province in order to promote and underscore the importance of girls' education. Awareness of their experiences and the importance of education for girls - among other issues - will be raised via the production of a number of voice recordings - produced by the girls - for broadcasting by community and commercial radio stations in the Northern Province.

Specific Project Objectives
The specific objectives include:
- Provide technical training in the use of Information and Communication technologies;
- Provide technical training in digital radio production;
- Provide gender training;
- Research and compile a training agenda and materials;
- Facilitate the production of 2-3 broadcast ready radio spots in 2-3 languages on themes identified by the workshop participants; and
- The production of the broadcast ready "spots" in various formats - (CD, MP3, etc) to facilitate the dissemination and use of the materials by the community, public and commercial radio sectors.

The first training course was held in Johannesburg with a group of girls from Limpopo. At the end of the course the girls had produced four radio-ready spots!
