The seventh annual campaign "16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence" - from Tuesday, 25 November to Wednesday, 10 December 1997 - will launch a long campaign of activism towards the 1999 elections in South Africa. Many activities will be running throughout the days. The National Women's Coalition in the Selbourne Hall has also organised the Special Sitting in the Johannesburg City Hall, corner President and Loveday Streets on Monday, 1 December 1997, at 10h00 as part of 16 Days of Action Against Violence Against Women. November 25 is The International Day of No Violence Against Women, and December 10 celebrates the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The 16 Days will give women the opportunity to join together in demanding accountability from government, and call for the implementation of commitments and promises made in Beijing. These Days give women the opportunity to reiterate their call to end violence against women. This year the demand is an end to all forms of gender-based violence at home and in South Africa. These Days will ensure that as many communities in all nine provinces have an activity on each of the 16 days to combat violence at community levels, and raise awareness and action against violence. Tents will be placed in all nine provinces to raise awareness around violence.
