Plan for 16 Days of Activism Against Domestic Violence in Eastern Cape
(Masimanyane Women's Support Centre, 23/9/98)

Minutes
Annexure I: Programme of Action
Annexure II: Attendance Register

Minutes of the Planning Meeting of the 16 Days of Activism Held in Rural Support Services on 28 August 1998

The meeting was declared open by Gomolemo Moshoeu (Chair person of the Eastern Cape Network on Violence Against Women). This was followed by the address of Mrs. Doreen Foster who delivered a speech on "why we should celebrate the 16 days of Activism" and that we should lift the silence around domestic violence.

The following ideas were discussed with full participation by those present:

  • Making CEDAW familiar to local people so that the very concept becomes a household word.
  • "Kitchen Chat" as an activity prior to the 16 Days of Activism. This will open the way for women to understand their rights through CEDAW and to become active during the campaign.
  • The use of human rights language when planning and implementing campaigns.
  • Planning should be around this year's theme "Womens' Rights Are Human Rights" when we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the United Nation's DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS.
  • Possibly a drama depicting Violence Against Women.

The next meeting will be on the 13th October 1998 Venue will be communicated by Masimanyane Women's Support Centre.

The reader is referred to Annexure 1 for the Programme of Action.
