Britain's Department for International Development (DFID) has agreed assistance of up to R19 million to contribute to a Soul City mass media initiative focusing on violence against women, and related support to the National Network on Violence Against Women (NNVAW) and its member organisations.

This innovative media initiative will comprise of a 13-part, prime time television series to be broadcast weekly on South Africa's most popular television channel, as well as a 60-part radio series broadcast daily in 9 of South Africa's official languages, printed booklets and education packs for schools. Complementary support will be used to build up the capacity of the NNVAW to raise public awareness and understanding of the issue of violence against women and advocate action to prevent it.

This combination of media intervention and institutional support promises a highly effective partnership between Soul City and the NNVAW.
