Thank you for acting to stop rape, violent crime and deaths.

Fight for the right of rape victims not to have an HIV death sentence and for government to speed up a victims charter to protect us all!

A woman or child is raped every 26 seconds in South Africa. Each year, according to studies by Unisa based on police information 1-million women and children are raped in SA. These are the worst rape statistics in the world.

One in two SA women will be raped at least once in her lifetime. SA also has the fastest growing rate of HIV/AIDS with 1 800 new cases each day. South Africa is facing an unprecedented human disaster.

The death sentence has been removed from rapists. But every rapist who has HIV/AIDS give a death sentence to women or children. Government by refusing to give free anti-AIDS (AZT, 3TC and Crixivan) drugs - that at R400 for 28 days costs less than a single day in hospital - to rape victims becomes co-conspirators in the murder of women and children.

In a few years time government will have to spend billions of rands caring for these dying women and children in our hospitals.

People Opposed to Women Abuse is leading a campaign backed by other anti-violence and womens organisations to stop this scourge.

Help us, to help you

Sign this petition that will be handed to deputy-president Thabo Mbeki calling for:
  • Free anti-AIDS drugs for rape survivors

  • better training, salaries and resources for police, prosecutors, judges and magistrates to ensure this crime is stamped out - and all violent crimes

  • by december 1999, the government must have enacted a victims charter to protect victims of all crime

Please fill in this petition and post to
