There is Plenty of change coming to World of Warcraft’s next growth Shadowlands. But one classic gold of the new zones and attributes in the matches, Blizzard is seeking to adjust some of the fundamental mechanics for gameplay as well. Throughout the release of the expansion’s alpha , data miners found plans for modifications to how area of effect (AoE) abilities could work when Shadowlands drops in the fall–and the instant response from top notch players was exciting.
Data revealed that many AoE abilities, particularly those for melee classes, had been capped to only be effected on a specific number of enemies. Last night, however, Blizzard appeared to explain its decision following an outpouring of expressed concern in the community. At a forum post, the programmer said that as electricity creeping proceeds in WoW, the”dominant strategy” for scenarios in dungeons and questing has been to pull larger and larger groups of enemies to cleave down all at once.
The strategy, while successful, has made the game shed some degree of nuance. In the end, it’s made it hard for some classes to discover a role in certain cases. “In Shadowlands, we’re taking a look at changes that could broaden the area of tactical alternatives, and in the process, more clearly differentiate the strengths of courses in a variety of AoE scenarios,” Blizzard said. “For instance, we’d love to view Outlaw Rogues or Fury Warriors excel in situations using four to five targets in close proximity to one another, although ranged casters like Frost Mages or Affliction Warlocks perform better in sustained damage contrary to groups of five or more goals.”
Blizzard also clarified that for many players who don’t attempt to fight more than just five or so enemies at one time, they won’t feel much change at all to their gameplay. However, with a single quick look at the Mythic Dungeon International, it is clear that larger pulls, especially in timed dungeons, are becoming the standard. Blizzard’s article implies that the programmer is seeking to make pulls of 10 to 20 enemies at a time”more threatening engagements.”
While the possible changes could be seen as a means to fight the power creep of AoE over the previous 15 years, many pros, including Maximum, are not happy with Blizzard’s explanation. “I feel like that is just another step along the street of slowing down the game, removing snapshotting, and adding GCD’s, which is bridging the difference between good and bad players,” he said. Blizzard’s decision to make this change in the Shadowlands alpha comes to more gold on mywowgold after the release of WoW Classic, which is known for using a range of caps to AoE harm for the melee class. In WoW’s unique iteration, ranged classes like mages were utilized as AoE pros.
